Tapio Wirkkala was born in 1915 in Hanko and was a Finnish artist and designer. Tapio Wirkkala began studying decorative sculpture at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki in 1933. Wirkkala is generally considered a leading figure in modern Finnish art industry. As a designer, he has not only made glass and furniture, but also designed sculptures, jewelry and the 1000 mark note for the Finnish Treasury. Several of his works have become international symbols of Finnish modernism. Nature and the solitude and  silence of ty forests were where he found inspiration for his works. He married Finnish cermaic artis Rut Bryk in 1945.
