Charlotte Wahlström - Blommande ljunghed (oil painting)

Large oil painting by Swedish artist Charlotte Wahlström (1849-1924).
It depicts one or her favourit motives, a flowering heather, the hills of Kullahalvön and dramatic skies. Measures: 97 x 145 cm (painting), 113,5 x 162 cm (with frame). Good condition. Only a few marks in yhe upper left corner.

In the late 19th century Charlotte Wahlström spent a lot of time in the area around Arild and Kullahalvön in the south of Sweden painting the heathery hills of the area.

Charlotte Wahlström was orphaned when in her teens. But since the family had money she started her studies at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm 1978, where she received a royal medal. With the medal came a scholarship which she used to travel to Paris in 1885. She also visited Bretagne and Germany and stayed at the artist colony in Barbizon.

She was one of the main artists behind the exhibition "De tio konstnärinnorna" (10 female artists) at the Royal academy of Art in 1901. Other artists where Alice Nordin and Gerda Sprinchorn. She also worked within a group of artists that also included Hilma af Klint and Anna Boberg.

She was very skilled and received men prizes and awards, among them a bronze medal at the World exhibition in S:t Louis 1911. This also brought her some fame in America. She died in Stockholm in 1924.
